- Hi,
-
- I have placed an update to the WSLPD program on sunsite.unc.edu; you can
- get the file WSLPD-11.EXE, a self extracting archive, in the directory
- pub/micro/pc-stuff/ms-windows/winsock/apps. Thanks to Paul Jones and his
- staff for taking care of me yet again.
-
- WSLPD is a Berkeley compatible print daemon for WinSock and Windows 3.1;
- it's kind of like the Unix lpd program. This version completely replaces
- the old version; you don't need the old to make the new work.
-
- Briefly, here are the problems addressed by the update:
- 1) Files can be sent directly to the printer without going through the
- Windows GDI. Now you can print PostScript, text with embedded escape
- sequences, PCL, etc. assuming that your printer supports these things.
- A special 'thank you' to Ingolf Magnus, who knows much more about the
- Windows API than I do.
- 2) The server port is now reusable; if you have a TSR based stack, you
- won't be seeing "[10048] Address already in use" any more.
- 3) The services database is consulted, but if the info I'm looking for
- isn't found then I use an appopriate default. So, you won't be seeing
- "can't find the printer service in your network database" any more either.
- 4) The syslog file is closed between writes (particular thanks to Jim Watt).
-
- The two text files incluced in the archive should tell you everything you
- need to know about what's new, how to set it up, etc. Please note that
- there are some differences from the last version.
-
- I have heard from Trumpet users and users of every commercial WinSock stack
- I've heard of, and WSLPD seems to work with them all; if you are using
- Novell, you might want to make sure you have the latest updates, in
- particular the async socket support "novasync.exe". In all cases, if it
- seems to not work, please make sure you have an updated network stack.
-
- A brief word about this project: I wrote it over a year ago as part of a
- much larger project. Since then I've been deeply involved in several other
- 'mini-projects', including WSGopher, which some of you have seen. I have
- lobbied hard for time to update WSLPD, but time has just not been
- available. So, please consider this an 'interim' update, and not the cool
- new version I was hoping to work on.
-
- Thanks also go to Egan Ford and Jim Sharick for beta testing; many thanks
- to everyone who has written. Even if I haven't mentioned your name here I
- appreciate your help and input just the same.
-
- Best regards,
- Dave
